FERMO AND MACERATA FOOTWEAR PRODUCTION DISTRICT

The footwear production district situated in Fermo and Macerata occupies a large area of our region consisting of 33 districts and has a number of small and medium enterprises specializing in production of shoe components (heels, bases, soles and accessories). All these workshops are innovation and quality-oriented.
A large amount of shoes is exported to such markets as Russia and the countries of the Eastern Europe, Germany and France.

The roots of footwear industrial district go down to the post-War period when tens of thousands of young people quit land working and started to find a new job in shoemakers workshops. Year after year, workshops started to become more numerous and increase their incomes and employees thus, radically changing quality and refining their taste to enter new markets all over the world. Here is how the footwear district was born, and became a model rather referred to small and medium footwear factories, than to big industrial complexes in Le Marche, and reached a peak in Italy’s shoe production and now constitutes an extraordinary quality production phenomenon.
Throughout the 60’s and the 70’s, district’s enterprises, producing an high-quality shoe with moderate prices, have observed a ton of successes on international markets and brought to a spontaneous increase in numbers of small and medium enterprises.
Fashion slowly became an highly influencing factor in industrial activity, thus requiring more complex production and many more production phases, so that the phenomenon of the increasing of even more specialised enterprises, became even more evident.
Then, shortly after the globalization arrival, new challenges have spread: international competition has grown, demand has became more and more changeable, so that knowing how to produce is not enough, but it is now necessary knowing how to innovate and compete on the market. So footwear entrepreneurs, also thanks to the generational turnover, started to invest on research, technological development, design and marketing.

Le Marche’s enterprises have decided to upgrade their products through a greater attention on material quality, manufacturing and finishing, but also brand, design, content and image. In this way, products are placed on high market sector in which price it’s not the only competition factor.
Many specialised enterprises diversify themselves for high-quality production and make Made in Italy become their business card and a quality guarantee. Other enterprise instead decided to focus on brand, matched with quality and innovation. On the contrary, enterprises that specialized on low-medium quality product are a major minority.
Therefore Le Marche represents an excellence on manufacturing quality aspect that, combined with creativity and innovation, allow footwear district’s enterprises to face the globalization challenge.
